I’m going to focus positive thought on certain of the inhabitants of this Real Mind Garden to prove that Primary Perception exists and is easy to observe.

The plants circled in the photos are the ones that are going to be given extra special mental attention.

Was sind Mikro-caps?

Soon it will be time to leave outdoor living spaces and ride out winter’s cold indoors. But before you batten down the barbecue and stow the patio cushions, don’t forget to take care of wooden structures – like decks, pergolas and play sets – that must remain out in the elements.

Routine maintenance of these structures – often made from Western red cedar – can ensure they weather the winter well and are ready for you to enjoy come spring. Plus, beautiful, well-kept outdoor structures enhance curb appeal and your home’s resale value.

“Western red cedar is a popular material for outdoor structures because of its natural durability and beauty,” says Paul Mackie, or “Mr. Cedar” as he’s known in the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association (WRCLA). “Preparing your outdoor living structure for winter is an important step to help maintain that beauty.”

Mackie and the wood experts of the WRCLA offer the following tips for winterizing your wooden outdoor structures:

* Clean leaves, dirt and pine needles from between the boards of your deck. This will increase airflow around the boards and reduce the opportunity for mold and mildew to grow. Even though Western red cedar contains natural chemicals that resist insects and decay, excessive dirt, debris and moisture can still harm the wood.

* Remove planters and flower pots – even those that are just ornamental – from the deck. Moisture can collect under planters or pots and leave stains on your deck. If it’s not possible to remove a planter from the deck, or you just have nowhere else to store flower pots, be sure to elevate them off the wood. Built-in planter boxes can be an attractive, permanent alternative than portable planters or pots.

* Clean wooden structures with a broom, a garden sprayer, a little bleach and a water hose. Kill any existing mold or mildew with a solution of three parts water and one part oxygen bleach applied with your garden sprayer. While the bleach in the solution is very dilute, be sure to avoid excessive spraying of the solution and keep it away from children, animals and plants. Rinse the treated areas with clean water once the mold and mildew are gone.

* Don’t pressure wash Western red cedar. “You can make it look like your grandfather’s corduroy pants,” Mackie says. Pressure washing can also disrupt the wood’s natural moisture resistance by forcing water into the wood. If you absolutely must pressure wash, keep the washer set below 800 pounds per square inch.

* Water, pollen and mold tend to collect and sit on horizontal surfaces throughout the summer. Left over the winter, they become a harmful cocktail that can speed deterioration of otherwise healthy lumber.

Winterizing outdoor structures is simple and quick – and ensures your outdoor living space will be in great shape, and ready for you to enjoy, once warm weather returns.

* Capitalising die Rückstände
* Coming einer Vereinbarung mit dem Kreditgeber, um die verpasste Zahlungen über einen vereinbarten Zeitraum.Dies ist in der Regel nur eine praktikable Lösung, wenn die Kreditnehmer sich leisten können, um die monatlichen Zahlungen Hypothek
* Bei Zahlung der Hypothek auf ein Interesse nur Grundlage für einen vereinbarten Zeitraum.Natürlich wird dies nur noch eine Option offen für die Zahlung der Hypothek auf eine Rückzahlung.Diese Methode wird als eine unmittelbare kurzfristige Lösung zur Linderung der unmittelbaren Druck wie die Rückstände werden noch ausstehender
* Steigerung der Laufzeit der Hypothek.Dies wird mit einer Kürzung der monatlichen Zahlungen, so dass sie mehr bezahlbar,
* zu einem Stellenabbau billiger Eigentum.Dies könnte der Kreditnehmer zur Verwendung der erhöhten Cash zur Begleichung der Rückstände.Dies ist natürlich nicht immer eine praktikable Lösung, da sie abhängig von der Verkäufer der Suche nach einem Käufer für die Immobilien und so weiter,
* Surrendering eine Investition, wie beispielsweise einer Stiftung oder eines ISA an der Hypothek.Ablieferung einer solchen Politik wird in der Regel zu einem erheblichen Verlust für die Anleger als sehr selten wird er oder sie erhalten den vollen Wert der Politik.Die Prüfung muss dann, wie sich die Hypothek zurückgezahlt werden am Ende der Laufzeit keine Rückzahlung Fahrzeug

For years, my dad has kept a modest sized garden in our yard. He also maintained several fruit trees. Every year, there were fresh apples, pears, blueberries, blackberries, and grapes. The garden yielded whatever we wanted to plant. And every year, we could choose to plant new things. For instance, my fiancee and I have fallen in love with zucchini. I thought it would be great to plant some and it thrived in there!

I took this whole experience for granted. Since I will soon have no land of my own to plant on and I will have to buy my own fruits and vegetables, I have a new appreciation for gardening. I’m going to really enjoy gardening this summer, but that doesn’t mean I will have to stop when I move. Even in an apartment, one can enjoy the rewards of gardening.

We are now a four-car family - you know, the sort of people Gordon Brown loves: four lots of insurance, road tax, fuel tax etc, not to mention the roadside cameras. It wasn’t through choice so much as the fact that where we live, the bus service is more of a weekly Stage and a return trip costs even more than a shop at Tesco. Anyway, it means that parking has become a real problem for us (and our neighbours), so we decided to lose the front lawn and increase the size of the drive to get another car off the road. However, since we are keen gardeners, we wanted to do something that would be good for the garden, so rather than opt for a carpet of block paving over the entire area, we looked at ways of getting something that would be suitable for parking a car on and still allow us some “green”.

We discovered the perfect solution with ‘GrassGuard’ from Marshall’s. This is a concrete ‘waffle’ block which is laid on a bed of compacted gravel. The holes in the block are filled with soil and sown with grass seed, so you have a lawn you can stand a car on. The whole lot is porous, so rain water soaks back into the soil, rather than going straight down the drains to add to the localised flooding problems.

The contractors, Nigel, Dean and Paul, did a brilliant job and everything is now looking great. The grass seed has started to germinate to give us the beginnings of our new ‘car proof’ lawn and suddenly, the whole area looks like we hoped. Not that anyone has dared park on the grass yet!

I insisted on sowing the grass seed myself, which I thought at the time was a good idea. I also insisted on digging over the compacted soil in the borders around the new lawn and drive. I now know this was a very bad idea, as I’m as stiff as a board, having pulled muscles I didn’t know were there to be pulled. One more crack about a Zimmer frame and I may have to hit somebody, if I can lift my arm to do it. I always advise people to take it easy and ‘pace themselves’ if they have not done any digging for a while, I just wish I would learn to practice what I preach.

The other problem, which we had not foreseen, is cats. More to the point, cats turning my newly-dug borders into a litter tray! You don’t realise how many cats there are in your neighbourhood until they start to treat your garden like the local savings bank and leave a deposit. We are just going to have to put as many new plants as possible in the border as quickly as we can to make sure there is less bare soil available.

On a more cheery note, this is the time of year when many of the seed companies invite the Press to view their trial grounds and take a sneak preview of what will be available for next year. Recently, Val and I went up to Thompson & Morgan, near Ipswich.

This plant produces baby cucumbers the size of large gherkins and is a heavy cropper producing only female flowers. The real bonus is its tolerance to powdery mildew.

My garden has been flourishing all summer long. I have been staring at corn stalks taller than me, tomato plants dotted with red ripe tomatoes, full ripening squash laying under their large shady leaves, all of it, just waiting to be eaten. I’m fairly patient, and honestly with gardening, you have to be patient. I was waiting for the day that I would walk out to my garden and say “today’s the day to pick all of this stuff”. Unfortunately Mother Nature had a different plan for all that lovely food.

Things were looking great!

I was in the midst of preparing for a much needed vacation to Tennessee. My husband and I had never been on a trip together that didn’t involve visiting family either in Florida or Maryland. It was nice to be preparing for a trip solely based on enjoying the pleasure of each others company while nestled into the side of a mountain. Just like any woman I know, vacation means new clothes. I needed some shorts and some new shirts so I could enjoy my trip a little bit more, right? I went shopping one afternoon and was literally in the store for about an hour. While leaving the store I received a phone call from my husband, asking me “What the hell happened over at the house!” I had no clue what he was talking about, and proceeded to question him. Hail, downed limbs, dented siding, ripped gutters, trashed garden! I suddenly didn’t really care about the downed limbs and dented siding, I had worked so hard on that garden that I suddenly felt like someone dropped my vase in ceramics class. I was heartbroken. I sped home to survey the damage. It looked like a tornado hit our lot, and only our lot. We probably have the most trees on the street, so every time its winds or we have a bad storm, you can see the destruction and despair over at our house, it’s usually a hot foliage mess.

All of my tomato plants had been knocked over, which wasn’t a big deal; I just propped them back up and placed their stakes back into the ground. My pepper plants had holes in their leaves; there was nothing I could do about that, they would repair themselves. My squash looked ok, but honestly you would have to set squash plants on fire to ruin them, or so I thought. My potatoes were about the same, their greenery had wilted away months ago, and they were simply sitting in the ground, waiting to be eaten. My beans and sunflowers were all limp and sad looking, like they needed a hug, and I proceeded to stroke their leaves and talk to them, because that’s how I roll. My corn on the other hand, that was a sad sight, they were all wind beaten, leaned over to one side, like someone ran them over with a truck, and most of the stalks had bends and kinks in them that were about to break. All of this happened the day before we left for vacation. I really had little work to do in the garden, I could only prop the plants back up, and hope for the best. My poor husband on the other hand had to borrow a bigger chain saw from our neighbor, since the limbs that were down in our yard we bigger then our house. We spent the entire evening cleaning up the yard, when I should have been packing.

The Garden was not happy, not happy at all…

Our trip to Tennessee was awesome, we stayed in a wonderful cabin with two of our best friends, another married couple that we know from before Justin and I really were even thinking about marriage. We spent time in the mountains, went hiking, went shopping, enjoyed the scenery. I took a lot of tomatoes, potatoes, green beans, peppers, and squash with me, so I wouldn’t have to buy any of that stuff while I was there. The week flew by, as it always does, and we were on our way back to Maryland before I knew it. My only indication of time was judged on how much I missed my dog, and I missed her a lot.

In the Smoky Mountain National Park

Upon returning home it took me a few days to get out to my garden and see how things had progressed. My dad had come over and watered while I was gone, so everything looked pretty good upon first inspection. I picked the ripe tomatoes, peppers, and green beans. I began to notice that the leaves of my squash and pumpkin plants were looking a big brown, so I headed over to that side of the garden. Looking at one of my pumpkins I noticed a little white bug crawling up the stem of the plant, leading me to a view of all of his thousands of brothers and sisters. Insert screaming and MF-ing here, because that’s what I proceeded to do for about 5 minutes. I had squash bugs! They were killing my squash and pumpkin plants, and as someone who avoids putting chemicals on their food, I couldn’t do anything about it, other then rip everything out and hope they died. I pulled all my squash plants, and all my pumpkin plants, covered the garden in a natural pest control powder and hoped for the best. As I was finishing cleaning up the mess that had been made by pulling out the bug covered plants, I noticed these little squash bugs crawling up out of my potato plants. I refused to lose my 30 potato plants to some hungry squash bugs, so at 8 o’clock on a Monday night, my husband and I dug up 40 feet of potato plants, we filled an entire 15 gallon Rubber maid bin with potatoes.

The Damage Done…

Squash bugs….aka JERKS!

When you dig up potatoes that you don’t plan to eat within the next 3 hours, don’t wash them. Potatoes shouldn’t be washed until you are about to prepare them for your meal. Instead leave the dirt on the potato, store them in an area that his cool in temperature and wont expose them to too much moisture or light, and keep an eye on things. If you notice a potato with some soft spots or a rotten area, get rid of it as soon as you see it. That one rotten potato could ruin the entire crop. FYI-mine are in the Rubber maid bin, with the lid no totally sealed onto the top to allow for some air flow, sitting on my kitchen floor.

The Bounty

HUGE!!

DINNER!!!

I’ve noticed now that my plants are in full swing, I really just keep an eye on them, check for weird bugs, trim out of control branches, and pull weeds when I see them. I’m into the maintenance section of gardening, so honestly it’s a little boring. The exciting thing now is the food that you make with your harvest.

I went out and purchased a food dehydrator from Target a week ago. I have been drying my herbs that have been growing since spring; once they are dry I grind them up in my food processor and put them in jars so I won’t have to by a lot of spices for a long time. I have Basil, Oregano, Thyme, Sage, Rosemary, Parsley, and I even dried hot red peppers and made that into a powder too, so I have hot red pepper powder as well. Spices are pricey, but seeds for all of these plants are ridiculously cheap. I think I will probably grow more of them next year so I won’t have to buy spices at all. I also made marinara sauce from all my spices and my tomatoes and peppers. I canned the tomato sauce on a Monday evening, which took about 3 hours all together. I have 10 jars of homemade tomato sauce that can be stored either in my basement or pantry for years. I also pickled jalapeño peppers from the garden.

My main goal for gardening is to sustain myself on that food, I enjoy the fact that I grew, cared for, and processed a lot of the food that I put into my body, I know where it came from, who touched it, and what was NOT sprayed on it. It’s a peace of mind that I worked hard for in the early spring months.

According to my husband, I’m still not allowed to get chickens, or a cow, but we’ll see how long he sticks to that.

Some of my readership - that is, friends and family who’ll be receiving gifts this holiday season - has asked me when I’m going to put up another post. The gap between posts is only partially due to laziness. The other more substantial reason has been technical issues.

My computer recently died. My friend Adam - without whose help this website wouldn’t exist - miraculously brought my computer back to life (thanks, Adam). And then my power cord stopped working. Also, my oscillating fan’s motor wore out. I know I don’t have much money, I don’t need my electronic equipment to remind me.

In the meantime, I’ve been getting in touch with my agricultural side by tilling the soil of my back yard.

O.K., so there’s not much soil in the back yard, and what soil does exist I’ve been told not to use because there’s no way to know what has been dumped back there.

My herb-growing adventure actually began in late April, when I bought basil, parsley, and rosemary from Sprout Home.

The plan was to move them outdoors as soon as the weather turned. I don’t even have the energy to go into the latest bad weather superlatives, so I’ve come up with a Chicago weather Mad Lib that should cover the past few weeks, as well as all of the last six months:

This has been the [ordinal number] worst [noun denoting calendar period] since [year] . It has been unusually [adjective describing inclement weather] . I can’t believe the [plural proper noun] decided to settle here. What were those [obscene plural noun] thinking? Of course, I knew what I was getting into when I moved here, so what was I thinking? [Exclamatory expletive] .

Anyhow, time dragged on and my plants remained indoors, looking sadder and sadder. One weekend when a spate of warm weather played with my vulnerability and made me think spring was actually here, I went to get a window box and maybe a few more herbs.

I’ve always extolled the virtues of shopping at locally-owned businesses, but like many left wing causes, I only believed in it because of some vague notion that it was the right thing to do, like this rally I went to:

This time, though, I decided to check out Home Depot first, a trip that helped me realize there are pragmatic reasons for shopping local. Here’s the beaut. Notice the overcast skies, thus proving this Home Depot is in Chicago.

I picked up the least expensive window box they had - a 24″ plastic “terra cotta” number - and needed to buy dirt to put into it. I wanted to know how much to get, so I flagged down a Home Depot employee. After spending a good two minutes getting him to understand what I was asking - how much dirt fits in this window box - he then walked over to where the window boxes were displayed and read the tag, which of course didn’t say the volume, otherwise I wouldn’t have asked this guy in the first place.

During my year off from college, the first job I held was at Best Buy. The training about company policies, in particular the extra warranties you can purchase, was very thorough. Training about the product being sold - in my case, home audio equipment - was entirely non-existent. Another interesting fact about employment at Best Buy is that until you work there for a certain period of time, they don’t give you the Best Buy blue shortsleeve polo, or at least that’s how I remember the rules going. In either case, I spent my entire short tenure there wandering around the home audio section in street clothes, walking up to other people wandering around the home audio section in street clothes and asking if I could help them out. When I first started, they would suspiciously (understandably) ask their question, and I’d walk over to the product in question and read from the tag affixed to the display. I eventually changed my technique so that when they asked their question, I’d just tell them I’d get someone who knew what they were talking about to help them out. By the time I left, two months after starting, I just silently wandered around the home audio section in street clothes, hoping that Best Buy management, like my customers, would presume that I was an unpaid member of the public, which really, save for $8 an hour, I was.

Point is, I understood quickly that this Home Depot employee had no knowledge of the volume of the window box I had picked out, nor did he want that knowledge. In the end, I bought two bags of soil, which was more than I needed, although I think they only cost $3 a pop. Time well spent.

Learning my lesson, I then hopped into my Zipcar (Yuppie, a-way!) and went to Grand Street Gardens.

This place was exactly what I was looking for. I should write a good Yelp review, but usually I try to only write reviews for places that I can complain about (it’s cathartic). The size alone makes this place great, but the motion of the ocean was what got me. A wonderfully helpful young lady recognized I had no idea what I was doing, held my hand, and got me to spend way more money than I meant to. She sent me packing with seven new plants (to go with the three at home), more soil, pots, and a trowel.

I bought pots because in my enthusiasm for the customer service, my project ballooned to the point where my herbs wouldn’t fit in a window box. And anyhow, the parsley should be by itself for some reason, and certain herbs would be better off being with some and without others. I guess.

Here’s the big pot in my backyard.

Clockwise from one o’clock (in the photo below): Sage, chives, basil, rosemary, and mint.

Here’s parsley, the loner bad-ass of the bunch:

Here’s my window box. From right to left, it’s thyme, marjoram, dill, and cilantro.

By the way, this picture was difficult to take because I live directly across the street from a school and I wanted to avoid the following exchange:

PARENT, WALKING CHILD TO SCHOOL: Hey, what are you doing up there?

ME: Taking pictures for my website!

To avoid such confusion, I took the pictures out my front window early in the morning, when the only people out were those manning the garbage truck. Those photos you can see on my other website, www.sexycityemployeez.com.

If you’re still reading this website, let’s take a closer look at the window box herbs.

First, there’s the thyme. This guy has been growing pretty well, but it just doesn’t look like the thyme I buy at the grocery store. I can’t quite figure out what’s different. It looks fresher or the leaves are bigger or something. I haven’t eaten any yet.

Here’s the marjoram. This one is really doing well. It’s definitely my most noble looking herb. I haven’t eaten any of this plant either.

But something sinister is happening in the left side of the window box.

In the close-ups below, you can see that it looks like someone’s been sitting on the dill and cilantro when I’m not around, or maybe it’s that I have no idea how to take care of plants.

I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO TAKE CARE OF PLANTS

Here are my issues:

I think I’m supposed to cut these plants back to help them grow, but when? Where? How often?

Buying ten plants seemed like a good idea at the time, but getting myself to walk down three flights of stairs to get to the herbs in the backyard has severely limited how much of them I eat.

I’ve only eaten the dill and the parsley. What am I waiting for? I’m waiting to know whether cutting them this early would be good for them, and I’m waiting to know where I should cut them.

My rosemary should be taller, shouldn’t it? How can I make that happen?

I was trying to think of issues involving the plants in the back yard and was having trouble remembering what was planted there. Then it occurred to me that I was too lazy to even scroll up to look at the picture. Those herbs just aren’t going to get eaten.

Besides the problem with my dill and cilantro, it appears that someone or something has been digging a hole into the center of the large outside pot. Could it be the same party responsible?

An already thick plot will undoubtedly thicken as spring shivers into summer, so stay tuned for more exciting plant adventures.
